LightWave || Glendale CA

LightWave || Glendale CA

LightWave was a public installation activated from October - November 2021. We came up with the idea for LightWave as a project for the City of Glendale’s Arts and Culture Commission to honor the experience of the COVID pandemic through public art. Our final installation encouraged social connection while staying physically distanced, using motion sensors to allow different combinations of people to activate light patterns in an interactive, social, and connected way. When motion sensors were not activated, the light installation automatically progressed through a series of programs customized by us. This installation was an incredible opportunity to engage people in the public sphere during a time of collective trauma. Through this art piece, we hope the public was able to experience a sense of beauty and wonder, as well as connection to friends, family, and strangers alike.

Design

  • 25 ft. long LightWave

  • 134 light tubes with 60 pixels each for a total of 8,040 independently controlled pixels

  • A custom hyperbola construction that created a sense of twisting movement and allowed for differing experiences based on the angle in which the piece was viewed

  • Custom live light programming set to automated progression + motion sensor activation by individuals and groups

  • Month long installation, live from October 9 - November 12 2021

Triforium Los Angeles

Triforium Los Angeles

LightRiders was honored to be a part of this incredible project to bring the Triforium back to life for a three part series in the fall of 2018. Featured in the LA Times and the culmination of a multi-year project, this endeavor revived a decades old, ahead-of-its-time audiovisual structure originally designed and installed by Joseph Young. With new technology (and some old tech), we were able to get the Triforium back up and running for a limited, temporary run. Hopefully, it can be restored to embody the original vision of Joseph Young’s futuristic vision.

From the Triforium Project

“The series, curated by Claire L. Evans and Jona Bechtolt of 5 EVERY DAY and YACHT, is hosted by Tom Carroll of TOM EXPLORES LOS ANGELES and made possible with the assistance and support of LA City Councilmember JOSE HUIZAR, the Los Angeles DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS, the GOLDHIRSH FOUNDATIONTHE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION, and NOW ART LA.”
